Pool Cover
A pool cover is essential for pool owners. A good cover
will keep a pool warm, prevent evaporation, keep debris out and many
have safety features to prevent accidental drowning. In many warm and
arid areas, a cover prevents water from evaporating which is important
for drought stricken climates where pools are often popular. Keeping
a pool covered at night and when not in use will save money in energy
costs by preventing heat loss through the water. Some covers actually
help to heat the pool naturally during the day with energy from the
sun.
There are two main differences in pool covers, automatic and manual.
An automatic cover has a crank, or motor that pulls the cover across
the swimming pool. A tensioned wire is responsible for pulling the vinyl
across the pool from the sides, while rollers and an aluminum cross
bar keep the mat aligned. Most automatic covers completely seal the
pool off at the sides so it is impossible to fall underneath the cover,
which is one of the leading causes of drowning in home pools.
Other types of pool covers are called solar blankets and thermal bubble
covers. A solar blanket allows light to pass through the cover into
the water, but prevents it from leaving causing a slight increase in
temperature. Thermal bubble covers float on the surface of the pool,
like a solar blanket, but are more for preventing heat loss and evaporation,
so are generally used more often in extreme hot and cold temperatures.
