Solar Pool Heaters
Solar pool heaters are a cost effective alternative to
gas powered, electric and other fossil fuel based heaters. Many pools
have heaters to keep the pool warm during cooler months. Using the sun
to heat a pool is not new. All summer long pools are heated by the sun,
many without any extra help at all, but as soon as it gets cool outside,
the water chills as well making a heater necessary to swim in the off
season.
A solar pool heater uses the energy from the sun to heat the water,
very similar to a household solar water heater, but unlike household
systems, the water supply is already connected to a pump and circulation
system. The main advantage to solar heating is that it is free once
installed, and has very little maintenance. A gas heater will cost thousands
of dollars per year just in gas once it is running, while solar heat
requires only the initial installation and material cost.
Solar pool heaters work by pumping water to solar collectors which convert
the suns energy into heat. Solar collectors are usually installed on
southern facing rooftops, but can also be placed on the ground. Once
the water is heated, it is forced back into the pool, and more water
fills the collectors. Since a pool has a pump already, these systems
are simple to install by most pool owners and offer a long life with
little maintenance.
